The city was established by King Pandukabhaya, developed further into the center of the Sinhalese Buddhist culture, with great palaces, monasteries and not to mention pioneering irrigation systems that could support a large population.

Places of interest

The ruins of Anuradhapura extend over more than 40 sq. km and there’s a series of historically valued sites that needs to be explored:

● Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a sacred tree and the direct descendant of the tree under which Buddha gained enlightenment over 2,300 years ago.
● Ruwanwelisaya Stupa: A huge, white dome housing the relics of Lord Buddha.
● Jetavanaramaya Stupa: This religious building of the 3rd century stands tall to 122 meters high and is still a witness to engineering ingenuity in times long past.
● Abhayagiri Monastery: Dating from the 1st century BCE, this complex could house 5,000 monks. The statue of Samadhi Buddha used to rest here. Its libraries and meditation halls are worth observing.
● The first Buddhist temple of Sri Lanka called Thuparamaya and carvings in the famous Isurumuniya Rock Temple.

How to get to Anuradhapura

Most cities have easy transportation available to Anuradhapura. Taking the train is guaranteed to take you via some of the most beautiful routes. Though crowded, buses are comparatively cheaper. However, private taxis are more comfortable for this 205-km journey.

Best Time to Visit Anuradhapura

The dry season is from May to September. The weather is at its best during this time: sunny, with relatively low humidity. The temperature ranges between 28-34°C and hence is ideal for exploration. Where possible, avoid the very hot months starting from March to April when the temperature crosses 35° C.

Basic Travel Tips

● Modest Dress: Always cover your shoulders and knees if you go to holy places.
● Remove shoes and hats upon entering temples.
● Bring with you bottles of water and sunscreen, and it's advisable that the explorations should start early because of heat.
● Respect customs: When doing stupa rounds, it is always clockwise and never turning your back to Buddha statues.

  • Take a tuk tuk and tour the whole archaeological park to get a sense of the atmosphere. The tuktuks offer tours across sites that are not within walking distance. Join the pilgrims and make an offering at the stupas; nearby Mihintale, 13km away, offers superb sunset panoramas. Go on safaris in Wilpattu National Park.
