Walpolamulla
Enter the mystical environs of Knuckles in Sri Lanka, where the smallest village in Asia awaits the brave traveler.
Walpolamulla or Walapola Mulluva is a beautiful, small, and secluded little hamlet aptly located in the Matale District of Sri Lanka's Central Province. Known to be the smallest village in Sri Lanka and probably all of Asia, this tiny enclave covers an area of about 0.004 km² (0.0015 sq mi) and stands at an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters (3,280 ft) above sea level, about 140 kilometers (87 mi) northeast of Colombo. It nestles deep within the UNESCO-listed Knuckles Mountain Range, a biodiversity hotbed of a variety of endemic species, and is accessible only on foot.
Nestled among mist-kissed peaks, lush cloud forests, and cascading streams, Walpolamulla offers a surreal getaway into the untamed embrace of nature. Once home to a few families, the village only has one resolute couple, Vajira and her husband, who stand sentinel over this hidden paradise against the marauding elephants and the jungle's relentless creep. The invigoratingly cool mountain air and panoramic view over the Dumbara Valley create an atmosphere of deep serenity-the ultimate off-grid getaway for people seeking authenticity and adventure really off the beaten track.
With great excitement, take the 8 km trek from Etanwela or the shorter detour of 3 km from Manigala climb through dense, leech-prone forests, slippery slopes, and rugged terrain which tests your spirit while rewarding your senses. Better taken with a local guide, this arduous hike meanders through babbling brooks and ancient electric fences against wild elephants, to enthralling flora and buzzing over 130 bird species, including the dazzling Sri Lanka blue magpie. And look for the elusive leopard and the endemic orchids while you make your way across this living tapestry of biodiversity.
Upon arrival, find the single mud hut of this village attesting to modest living amidst overgrown paddy fields and a dried-up lake perfect for starlit camping. Add to that Sri Lankan hospitality, unparalleled anywhere in the world-bathe from an outdoor barrel in soft rain, eat home-prepared roti and rice served in coconut shells, share tales of wonder around the fire with your hosts. Night falls with rustling leaves and the distant howling of wildlife-a lullaby that sends you deep into sleep and again into the arms of raw beauty in the wild.
To the bold and daring, Walpolamulla is not a place but a gateway toward self-comprehension. Go birdwatching during misty mornings, visit nearby ancient caves that echo Vedda heritage, or simply bask in the awesome views that extend across the horizon. Be it shooting for those ethereal landscapes as a photographer, tracing forgotten trails as a history enthusiast, or exploring the unused wilderness as an eco-lover, this ghostly retreat surely promises some unbelievable thrills along with soul-stirring tranquility.
